Celebrating 31 Years of Author Visits & Hands-On Writing Workshops in Schools

My new picture book, Rosie Ross, Recess Boss, is now out and available as a "Ready Reader" book through Rourke Educational Media. It's an 8"x 8" inch book, available in both hardback and softback. You can find it at your local bookstores or with online booksellers. It's part of a series featuring social/emotional issues as plot drivers. And it's only 98 words--yes, it's the shortest book I've ever written!--plus it has a list of "new words" and questions to help direct student reading and understanding, as well as social/emotional development.
Lily loved recess. Then along came Rosie Ross, Recess Boss. Will Lily ever enjoy recess again? Beginning readers in Pre-K through 1st grade can join Lily as she learns positive ways to solve a problem on her own!
Using MUMMIES to Teach 5-Paragraph Informative Essay Writing & Research . . .
Want to get your students EXCITED about researching & writing a 5-paragraph expository/informative essay?
Invite Darleen to your school to teach her "Nonfiction for Mummies" writing workshop, guaranteed to grab your students attention and get them writing!
For this workshop, Darleen presents a fun, informational, and "creepy" PowerPoint presentation about ancient Egyptian mummies (with photos of real mummies that kids will love!) and then provides students with a "fact sheet" that covers all the facts in her presentation. She discusses research and note taking, using headings. Then she directs students to write a 5-paragraph expository/informative essay using their fact sheet (which resembles research they would have done on their own if asked to research mummies) foscusing on the three parts of an essay: Introduction, Body, Conclusion.
Students walk away with a finished (or almost finished) essay and a tip-sheet to help them write and research their next 5-paragraph essay with tips on research, using headings, double-checking facts through different sources, organizing, writing, and editing.
It's a FUN and INFORMATIVE hands-on writing workshop that your students and teachers will love. Since this workshop involves a PowerPoint, discussion about researching essays, and writing, it will take a full 60 minutes and is recommended for fourth-grade and up. Not for younger grade-levels.
New Hands-on Writing Workshops for 2022:
Peace Poems--based on the picture book, Peaceful Pieces by Anna Grossnickle Hines. Students will discuss the word "peace" and what it means to them and to others and write different types of poetry about peace. Perfect for grades 3rd-12th.
I Have a Dream--based on Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior's famous speech, students will discuss their dreams for themselves, their families, and the world they live in. Students will write an essay about their dreams and learn no matter how small or big a dream is, they have the power to change the world. Perfect for grades: 3rd-12th
