www.scbwiok.org --this is the local Oklahoma chapter of the "Society of Children's Writers and Illustrators Inc." Oklahoma has an annual spring conference with editors, art directors, authors, illustrators, and agents who give inspirational discussions, share tips and advice, and even provide critiques your stories and art. There is also a fall hands-on workshop which provides break-out sessions, tips from local published authors & illustrators, and helpful publishing information. It's a great way to mix-n-mingle with other wanna-be authors/ illustrators, get connected with a critique group, make new friends with your same interests, and meet professionals in this field.
www.scbwi.org -- this is the national organization of the "Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators." They have a fabulous web site chock full of helpful information for wanna-be authors and illustrators, a bimonthly bulletin that comes to you in the mail which is full of articles written by published authors & illustrators, interviews with well-known professionals, writing tips, listings of upcoming conferences all over the United States AND in other countries, illustrating tips, publishing information, and columns of special interest for anyone in the field of children's book writing.
Also, there are a million-zillion (okay, that's an exaggeration but almost that many) web sites for children's writers & illustrators on the Internet. Surf the net and you'll find all sorts of helpful information. A great place to start is with the 'Publisher's Weekly' web site, as well as sites by publishers, children's literary agents, and the authors and illustrators themselves. Harold Underdown, author, has a nationally- recognized site called, The Purple Crayon. (And don't forget to check out the web sites of the Oklahoma authors/illustrators that have links listed on this site, as well.)
